The Outer Banks, especially the Corolla and Duck areas, has always been my favorite place in the world. I rack my brain thinking of a way I can move there. It calls to my soul. Seeing how the community and businesses have rallied around Larry and Cristie just warms my heart, and confirms this is a special place.

It’s incredibly difficult to get back into the normal swing of things after going through a tragedy like we experienced last week. We are still in shock, we are emotionally and physically exhausted, and we are grieving. But there are still horses here that need us and who give us a reason to get up and get moving every morning even when it’s really, really hard.

Life does go on.

So with that in mind, today we’d like to introduce everyone to the newest member of the Corolla herd, a colt named Ember. He was born the first week of July and at a month old is a big, healthy foal with a very bright future ahead of him.

Ember has everything he needs to grow up into a stallion who will one day produce foals of his own - an experienced mother who is taking great care of him right now, a habitat that provides him with plenty of food and fresh water, other horses who will teach him the ins and outs of being a wild horse, and survival instincts that have been passed down through many generations. It is up to all of us to make sure that Ember is never threatened by the things that we humans can control. That includes giving him plenty of space and never petting or feeding him, driving slowly and being aware of our surroundings at all times, cleaning up after ourselves, and being good stewards of the environment.

Every single person who sets foot on the 4x4, be it tourists or full-time residents, property owners, daytrippers, contractors, and everyone in between, has a responsibility to follow the rules and keep these horses safe. Please help us make sure that Ember’s future stays as bright as it is right now.

One would think we wouldn’t need to say this to adults… “being aware of our surroundings at all times, cleaning up after ourselves, and being good stewards of the environment.” But yet it needs to be said over and over again. 🤦🏼‍♀️ so sorry about your loss. But so glad to “meet” Ember! ❤️

At 11:30pm on Friday, July 26 we received a 911 call that a horse who had been standing on the beach was struck by a vehicle. The incident was witnessed and reported by a visitor who had been surf fishing at the time. No other horses were injured. The driver of the vehicle was arrested.

The horse that was hit was 10-year-old stallion Bullwinkle, and the injuries he sustained were as follows:

-Significant skin trauma over the right side and back.

-Broken right hind leg with fracture of the lower femur.

-Left hind trauma and lateral destabilization of the hock with collateral ligament injuries, allowing the leg to bow outwards.

-Pendulous abdomen when standing and once euthanized fluid-filled abdomen confirmed with a fluid wave of manipulation, likely due to significant internal trauma and blood within the abdomen.

Bullwinkle’s injuries were severe and ultimately fatal. Our veterinarian arrived on the scene early Saturday morning to humanely euthanize him.

On Thursday, we posted a video of two stallions fighting and told the story of how the challenging stallion had been vying for the other stallion’s mares for several weeks. The challenging stallion was Bullwinkle. He was in the prime of his life, and went from being a symbol of what it means to be wild and free to a tragic example of how irresponsible, reckless human behavior can cause pain, suffering, and irreparable damage to the herd in an instant. Bullwinkle will never produce any foals. His genetics are gone from the herd forever and with such a small, endangered population the ramifications of that will last for generations.

Bullwinkle died as wild as he lived; at no point did he welcome our intervention and he remained wary and defensive even as he laid on the dune unable to stand anymore. The fight drive that he was always known for never left him, right up to the end. He was exactly what a wild Banker stallion is supposed to be, and we are glad that he at least never had to leave the beach - he was never meant to. He was buried at the edge of the meadow where the video from Thursday was filmed. There is not much comfort that can be found in anything about this tragic incident, but we are at least grateful that we could help him pass without further suffering and provide him with the respectful and dignified burial he deserved.

We’d like to thank everyone who helped us Friday night and Saturday morning, especially the visitor who called 911. Otherwise there would have been no consequences for the driver, we would have never known what happened, and Bullwinkle may have suffered for longer than he did. Thank you to our community who came together to help us that night and into the day on Saturday, to the Currituck County sheriff’s department for their quick response and on-going support, and to our staff and veterinarian for their unending dedication to always doing what’s best for the horses.

Caught some cool herd dynamics and behavior on camera today.

The darker stallion has been with the black mare and her two-year-old filly for the last couple years. The lighter brown stallion tried to steal them from him a few weeks ago, but was unsuccessful. Since then he’s been trailing the trio, and will regularly try to sneak in and grab the mares. The first stallion has to stay vigilant all the time - it must be exhausting, but he is really doing a good job of protecting his mares from the challenger!

At the end of the video you’ll see the darker stallion put his head down and move his mares away from the other one. This is called snaking, and it’s one of the few times you’ll see a stallion seriously bossing his mares around. When there’s no threat present they are typically happy to follow along and let the mares run the show.

It will be interesting to see how this drama plays out! Who are you rooting for? (I’m rooting for the mares. 😉)

The driver that killed Bullwinkle should be publicly shamed on top of the most severe punishment allowed for the action. There was no way for me to comment on the post providing the tragic news so I’m posting on this one. RIP Bullwinkle 🙏🙏🙏💕

Happy 3rd birthday to Brio! 🎉

Brío was rescued at 7 months old after being orphaned. He was starving, underdeveloped, and had pneumonia, but in the years since then has grown into a happy, healthy young horse. As he enters his third year of life we are looking forward to continuing his training and excited to see what the future holds for him. Even though he is no longer wild he still serves a great purpose as an ambassador for the important work CWHF does to protect and preserve this endangered breed.

Did you know that most foals are born with a coat that is much lighter than what it will look like once they’re fully mature? They shed their first coats when they’re a couple months old, which is right about now for this year’s foals. They will look spotty and splotchy for a while, especially around their eyes and muzzles, and on their legs. We’ve gotten a few concerned calls and messages about them but don’t worry, this is a completely normal part of growing up!

We are excited to welcome the Corolla Wild Horse Fund to the Town Green on Tuesday, July 9, at 10:00 a.m. Come meet Riptide, a rescued, gentled Banker horse and learn more about the wild horses, the rescue farm, and what the Corolla Wild Horse Fund does to keep the horses safe and thriving.

Riptide is a 5-year-old stallion who was rescued as a yearling in the summer of 2020 when he contracted a potentially fatal fungal infection. Riptide spent nearly six weeks in the hospital at NC State while the vets there worked diligently to save his life. He has fully recovered from the infection and has become an excellent ambassador for the Banker breed.

It is hot, hot, hot this afternoon!

Here at the farm we dump, scrub, and refill the water troughs every afternoon to encourage the horses to drink and stay hydrated. Louie, Buster, and Riptide were definitely ready for a cool drink! They also have access to salt and have fans in their barn.

The wild horses have access to plenty of fresh water and will move around throughout the day to take advantage of the shade and breeze. But the heat can still be very dangerous, so please give them lots of space, especially on days like today.

(And don’t forget that you need to stay hydrated too! Be safe out there! 🏖️)

Reunited! Thanks to our amazing staff, volunteers, and community.

This morning filly Esther was found alone with her parents nowhere in sight. We immediately jumped into action and reached out to residents in the area to help us keep an eye on Esther while our staff and other helpers went to look for her mother. After over an hour of searching they were finally located, and under the direction of our herd managers and vet, Esther was safely captured and taken back to her mother. She immediately began to nurse and seems no worse for wear. But the situation could have had a very different ending if it were not for everyone who jumped in to help.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Kelli, Gretchen, Carol, Dolly, Curtis, Brandon, Bree, Adam, Sharon, Ronda, Darci, and Peter for all of your help this morning.

It takes a village. 💜

ETA: Not sure why they became separated. It just happens sometimes. Most likely that the foal was sleeping and parents moved on without realizing she wasn’t with them, and then mom couldn’t hear her calling for them.

We were there last week and she was lagging being the herd, playing and wandering, like a kid does, and her mother was just walking and munching along at the lead. I told her she needed to hurry up and get back to her mother, but she did not listen. Better keep an eye on her. 🐴🩷

Good advice from our friends down south. The horses know how to take care of themselves - getting in the way of that can lead to potentially life-threatening issues. Keep your distance and respect their space!Another hot and humid weekend on tap. When the heat and humidity are high during the day and nighttime temps don’t get below the mid-70s, it’s difficult for the horses to recover from the stress of the daytime heating overnight. Opportunities for rest in such conditions—especially for nursing mares and their foals—are so important.

During the day, the herd is often on the move—to the watering holes, in the swales to graze, and then to the beaches or up on the dunes to try and catch a breeze and escape from the flies. Imagine a little one trying to keep up, and the foal and its dam finding time to nurse and rest.

Don’t compound their stress and put them at risk by getting too close and causing them to move unnecessarily. That this mare felt secure enough to lay down with her baby and rest is pretty remarkable—but this is also a rare photo of such a moment. And one that Dr. Sue Stuska was able to capture because she was so far away and using a zoom lens and then cropped it.
